PakMet issues GLOF alert for Gilgit-Baltistan & Chitral, temperature to rise by 5 degrees

Islamabad: Pakistan Meteorological Department (Pakmet) has warned that the temperatures are likely to increase by up to 5 degree centigrade during the next three to four days in the mountainous Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral region.

A GLOF Alert issued by the federal organization, has said that localized heavy downpour is possible in GB and Chitral during the next couple of days. It has warned that the downpour, coupled with higher temperature, can trigger Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in the mountainous areas.

The provincial and regional authorities have been advised to take necessary steps to mitigate the hazards.

Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral have been hit by massive disasters during the last decade, causing severe loss of lives and property. Despite of the increasing scale of disasters, the GB government made insignificant allocations in its annual budget for disaster risk reduction.
