Baltistan University using drones to study ‘glacier grafting’
SKARDU: (PR) University of Baltistan has started a pilot research project to study Karakoram glaciers, as part of its efforts aimed at “addressing Pakistan’s water crisis”, said a press relase.
Glacier grafting is an established indigenous technology in Baltistan which facilitate plantation of glacier. A research project titled “Indigenous Glacier Grafting: documentation and Preservation” has been carried out by a team of University of Baltistan, Skardu that studied successfully planted glacier in Machulo village of Gangchhe, Baltistan.
Drone camera was also used to obtain on-site physical data and evidences while ethnographic accounts and relevant success stories have systematically been recorded through in-depth interviews from first had informants. The study is likely to attract international attention. This unique glacier study will provide first knowledge to address the global water scarcity issue and contribute towards the SDG goals regarding water and environment.
University of Baltistan is set to release an eye catching documentary film prepared by drone camera. The film will officially be released on July 30th, 2018.
