Water crisis discussed during seminar at the University of Baltistan, Skardu

 (PR) The Skardu district administration orgaznied a seminar to discuss the region’s growing water crisis. Speaking at the occasion, the Vice Chancellor University of Baltistan, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Naeem Khan elaborated the historical background of the Indus Water Treaty.

He highlighted the importance of water resources of Gilgit-Baltistan. He said that by preserving and protecting glaciers like Biafo, Siachin, Batura and Baltoro, the water resources can be be utilized to address the crisis.

The VC Dr. Muhammad Naeem Khan further highlighted the recent “Glacier Grafting” study program conducted by UoB. He said that a documentary was released by the varsity after visiting the local glacier sites grafted by the locals using traditional technology to cope with water scarcity.

He added that we have water resources but lack of management of water distribution system has caused the water crisis across the country. He said that this year, the water level in the Sadpara Dam seems to be alarmingly low.

Participants of the seminar included govt and military officials, local religious and political leaders, and activists.
