Diamir’s administration officials suspended, judicial probe ordered

Islamabad, February 19: Chief minister of GB has suspended DC, AC, SP and a magistrate over the police firing in Chials that led to the death of two people and injury to four others. A judicial probe has also been ordered for finding out those responsible for the carnage in Chilas.

Yesterday the police opened fire on a group of people while they were protesting near NAPDW’s hostel in Chilas. A man called Sabir Hussain died at the sport while another succumbed to injuries at the DHQ Hospital. Four were injured in the firing incident.

The issue was raised by MQM and PML (Q) in the national assembly and the prime minister condemned the acts of violence.

In the meanwhile public sentiments have flared up throughout Gilgit – Baltistan over the ugly incident and the loss of lives. Leaders of the Diamir chapter of PML (Q) have threatened the government that tehy would not allow the construction of dam in Diamir.

There are reports about deployment of Army in Chilas to control the situation. Traffic on Karakuram Highway remained suspended due  to the threat of further possible acts of violence.

Speaker GBLA told Pamir Times that the incident is unfortunate and the perpetrators will be brought to justice. He expressed solidarity with the people of Diamir and said that everyone in Gilgit – Baltistan condemns the deplorable act.

According to officials statement the police opened fire as a reaction to the firing coming from the protesting mob. However, no police or FC Jawan was reported injured.

The protesters had torched offices, hostels, police stations and vehicles after the death of two people.

  1. we should appreciate the role of MQM and PMLQ for highlighting this issue in National Assembly and fully condemn in all means to the act of violence against innocent protestors.

  2. The suspension of the heads of the law and enforcement agencies by the Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan is indeed a positive step by the administration to cool down the situation however the perpetrators must be bring to justices as soon as possible.
    We all condemn the brutality shown by the Police force and hope the judicial probe will judge the matter with clean spirit.
