Accused brigadier’s father urges govt to release him

KARACHI: The father of an army brigadier against whom the army initiated court martial proceedings has requested the government to hold an inquiry into his son’s arrest and direct the concerned authorities to release him.

Brig Ali Khan and four other officers were detained in May, 2011 for suspected links to Hizbut Tahrir. Brig Khan was working at the army’s headquarters in Rawalpindi at the time of his arrest.

Former army official Mehr Khan in his letter written on Feb 11 to Defence Secretary Nargis Sethi expressed concerns for his son’s life  and requested the concerned authorities to issue his release orders.

The letter said that Brig Khan was perturbed over the May 2 attack in Abbottabad and during a meeting at the General Head Quarters (GHQ) raised serious questions over the incident.

He also suggested during the meeting that all senior officers of the army should return plots and agricultural lands, it added.

The letter claimed that he was arrested after the meeting and kept in solitary confinement.

The letter further indicated that he suffered a heart attack and alleged that he was not given proper medical treatment.
