Gulmit, November 27: Rumbling and loud underground, “explosion-like”, sounds have waken up resident f Gulmit and adjacent village in the Gojal valley of upper Hunza.

The local people heard sounds of rumbling and underground loud sounds at around 02:30am on November 27. Many of the residents woke up due to the loud sounds.

The region has been faced with a natural disaster since January 2010, when the Hunza River was dammed due to a landslide near Attabad.

Similar sounds were also heard last year and the year before. Experts were of the opinion, last year, that the huge volume of water is putting pressure on the earth and the land is settling down beneath the surface. The sounds and explosions are caused by the settling down of the earth, it is believed.

It is also pertinent to note that while the water level has gone down considerably, thousands of tonnes of silt, soil and rocks have been deposited in the gorge between Shishakat, Ayeenabad, Ghulkin, Hussani and Gulmit, increasing burden on the ground

The settling of the earth and the underground movement has also caused cracking of wall of houses and other buildings in the region.

  1. No one knows for sure, but scientists speculate that these “booms” are probably small shallow earthquakes that are too small to be recorded, but large enough to be felt by people nearby

  2. Nothing to be worried about, it is just natural process of our lithosphere with geomorphic events.

  3. i request youth of Hunza particullary and youth of GB in gernel to force on Govt and NGO to install safety measures in disaster hit areas… other viz NGO accumulate dollars in the name of disasters …as they did in past… we need to come out frm religious dogmas,

  4. Shakir. Brother very few people will understand your hard words of geologists. Please explain the reason of these underground blasts in a simple words as how long our people will stay in a state of fear and uncertainty. The situation is really a nightmare for the residents. thanks

  5. What people hear is only a small fraction of the actual power of these sounds. … There can be quite a lot of causes why those waves are generated: earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, …. MY OPINION – something going on underground. May Allah protect our area. Aameen!

  6. Nothing to worry about it is due to breaking or displacement of rocks in subsurface, due to the load of the reservoir..the load of water causes the enormous pressure which results in displacement of subsurface rocks to balance the overlying stresses….earthquakes due to dams are generally of lower magnitude and are not very harmful…. all this process takes place to balance the overlying stresses….
