GBDMA asks residents of Hassanabad-Hunza to remain vigilant, be ready to leave houses on hearing siren

GILGIT/HUNZA: The Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority has issued a set of instructions, urging the residents of Hassanabad village of district Hunza to remain alert and cooperate with the authorities.

The residents of the village, potentially threatened by glacial expansion and lake formation, have been asked to leave their houses and move to safe and higher altitudes if they hear a siren coming from a nearby FWO camp. The locals have also been urged to avoid believing rumors and get authentic information from an especially established ‘control room’, by calling 05813-920100.

The locals have also been asked to avoid traveling to the Shishper glacier.

Meanwhile, a high-level meeting was held at the FCNA headquarters, where the region’s top bureaucrats reviewed the preparedness level. It was decided during the meeting, headed by FCNA Commander Major General Ehsan Mahmood Khan, that all necessary preparations will be completed within two weeks.

The Shisper glacier, located West of Hassanabad village, in the vicinity of district headquarter Aliabad, has expanded fast during the last six months, and a huge supra-glacial lake has been formed, which, the locals fear, can burst or overflow and cause extensive damages.
