GBLA Speaker and ministers admit government's failure in Hunza, Judicial Inquiry ordered

Gilgit, August 13:  GBLA Speaker, Wazir Baig, Law Minister, Wazir Shakil, Finance Minister, Muhammad Ali Akhtar and other leaders have admitted that the heinous crime committed by police in Hunza was a failure of the government. They have apologized from family of the deceased and shared their deep regret and sadness. Chief Minister, Mehdi Shah, has also condemned the incident and assured family of the deceased that justice will be done.

DSP Babar and Constable Afzal have been suspended from service and cases of murder have been registered against them. The Supreme Appellate Court has also taken a serious notice of the situation and ordered transparent investigation.

Federal Interior Minister, Rehman Malik, has directed IG Gilgit – Baltistan to submit a detailed report about the incident, which will be shared with President Zardari.

The Chief Minister has also announced compensation of PKR 300,000 for the dead and 50,000 each for the injured. Governor Pir Karam Ali Shah has also announced PKR 100,000 as compensation for the deceased.

 Opposition leader have termed the compensation to be a “joke”.

Wazir Baig, Speaker GBLA, has said that portraying the incident as a conspiracy is far-fetched. He has told a local newspaper that the officer on duty made a fatal error and caused a major man-made disaster for the people of Ayeenabad who have already been victims of a natural disaster. He has asked the masses to stay calm and abstain from taking law into their hands. “Justice will be done”, he has assured people at the funeral prayer in Aliabad today.

MLA Raziuddin Rizvi and MLA Didar Ali have expressed deep shock and anger over the incident and asked the government to ensure fair investigation and trial of the culprits. They have said that some elements are trying to create mayhem in the region and the government shall expose them.

  1. the two accused police officer and constable must be trialed in ant-terrorist court and exemplary punishmnet should be granted as this was done by anti-terrorist court in Sarfaraz Shah,s case in Karachi.
    The people of Gilgit Baltistan will nevertolerate such barbaric actions by law enforcement agencies.

  2. People of Hunza will never forget this brutal act of state-sponsored / state-backed terrorism. They want to know IDENTITY of the killers and want the authority to bring them to justice. Whether we consider it a conspiracy, government failure, or any revenge, we want to see the culprits punished in the same way they killed the innocent people, other-wise, they know how to deal with such killers.
