Gilgit – Mir Ghazanfar Ali Khan has threatened to resign as chief executive of the Northern Areas Legislative Assembly (NALA). Talking to the Karakuram Publishing Network (KPN), he criticised “attitude” of the bureaucracy and said that smooth transfer of powers, as narrated by a “constitutional package”, to the local representatives was not possible under the existing bureaucratic setup.
He said that the position he holds is meaningless and he does not enjoy independence in decision making. “I have been given authorities equivalent to that of a provincial Cheif Minister on paper”, he cried, “but in reality I don’t have the power to do anything at all”.
He further confessed that works of public interest were not progressing at all because of lack of coordination and cooperation between the establishment and the elected representatives. He, however, thanked President Musharraf for the “constitional package” terming it to be a historical package for the region.
He criticised the bureaucracy saying that they (the bureaucrats) were interferring in his power jurisdiciton and he was not being allowed to transfer and promote officers of his choice.
