[Event Diary] World Environment Day in Gilgit

“World environment Day” is celebrated each year all over the world on 5th June with an aim to promote eco friendly environment by minimizing threats that adversely affect the nature.The basic aim of this event is to raise awareness among the community on the current environmental issues and take some measures to conserve the environment for more prosperous future
WWF-Pakistan, Pakistan Wetlands Programme, Gilit-Baltistan Environmental Protection Agency(GBEPA) and UNDP`s project Mass Awareness for Water Conservation and Development (MAWCD) celebrated world environment day on 5th, June 2010 at IDP camp Nomal, Gilgit.
Different programs were arranged during the event, which include, clean up compaign, presentation on health and hygiene and distribution of awareness material on water conservation, actions, and tips for better health and hygienic condition at homes.
Miss Sadia, UNDP representative; briefly elaborated the programs objectives in Markazi Imam Bargah .During her presentation she emphasized women to play their active role to conserve the environment.
Dr.Humira Khan, Consultant, Pakistan Wetlands Programme (PWP), Gilgit-Baltistan, talked about the current solid waste issues. During her presentation she determined the role of women in conservation activities. She also discussed about the human actions that aggravate disasters in the area.
After presentation, an informal discussion was held with the IDPs. In this session the members of partner organizations discussed the health issues and distributed informative material to address the Health and Hygiene issues
The above mentioned partners placed dustbins outside each camp, to mange the solid waste in the camp area so again to show their reverence, the partners in collaboration with Sabeel Organization Scouts, Students of Al-Asar Public School conducted a clean up campaign of the whole camp. After collection of waste, the scouts properly disposed off the waste material.
At the end of this event Assist Director GB-EPA Syed Manawar thanked all the participants and youth clubs for their contribution in the event.
