Third administrative division, comprising of Astore and Diamer, on the cards
PT Report
Gilgit, January 13: Representatives of GB government as well as GB Chief Secretary has promised the protesters of Diamer that notification for formation of the third administration “Division”, comprising Astore and Diamer, will be released soon.
The promise was made during negotiations held at Jaghlot yesterday for opening of the Karakuram Highway that remained closed for four days, starting Sunday, last week.
The people of Diamer and Astore have been demanding formation of a new “Division” in the region to provide services for the populace at door steps. Support for the demand increased in the wake of sectarian killings in Gilgit city which spread a sense of insecurity across the region.
It is pertinent to note that Gilgit Division, comprising of Ghizar, Gilgit and Hunza – Nagar district, and Baltistan Division, comprising of Skardu and Ghangche Division already exist in the region. Formation of the third administration division is being seen as a major step towards devolution of powers to the local set-up formed as part of the 2009 “Empowerment Order”, issued by President Zardari.
An interesting fact about the current presence of three large administrative divisions in the region is its similarity with the historical governance structure.
