May 1: Measles has broken out in Gilgit and towns and villages located in the vicinity and dozens of children have affected by the disease, according to media report. The health department taking the serious notice of the situation has launched the week long vaccination campaign to control the epidemic.
According to a report published in a local daily, areas like Haramosh, Sai, Oshkhandas, Danyor and Jalalabad, the Surrounding areas of Gilgit, have badly affected by the epidemic and the disease is spreading very rapidly.
Health officials have reportedly said that 35 children have been brought to hospitals after being affected by measles with in few days and more than dozen children have been admitted”.
If the epidemic has already begun, then this points clearly to a failure on the part of the local health authorities to adequately immunize children on a routine basis.
