Gigit: Five year old dies after being knocked from bridge by vehicle

Gilgit, June 9: Mubeen, 5, a student of Nursery class, was going to school with his sister Monday morning when a speeding passenger vehicle (Suzuki Pickup) hit him on a bridge. Mubeen fell in the river, and was swept away by waves, losing his life.

The tragic incident occurred at a narrow bridge, connecting Amphary area with Konodas, on which small passenger vehicles and pedestrians commute side by side. The bridge lacks safety railings, according to our reporter, and it has not been repaired for a long time.

The incident was also raised by Haji Fida Muhammad Nashad in the GBLA during the 36th session today.

Sharing their views on the incident, the lawmakers accused the Chief Minister of awarding the contract for repair of the bridge to one of his dear ones, who has allegedly been delaying the maintenance work for more than a year.

Without naming the alleged the contractor, the legislators said that the child’s death is a result of his negligence and corruption and amounts to an act of murder.

The driver escaped from the crime scene after allegedly knocking over the child.

The Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly Speaker, Wazir Baig, ordered the government to lodge an inquiry and nab the driver of the vehicle, as well as the contractor who has allegedly been delaying the important project despite of taking the contract money in advance.

Talking to the media, Mubeen’s father, who is a clerk at a government department, said that he is not fully aware of the circumstances of the accident because he was not present at the site.
