Gilgit-Baltistan Supreme Appellate Court revokes Govt. of GB Order 2018

GILGIT: The Gilgit-Baltistan Supreme Appellate Court on Friday dismissed the newly promulgated Govt. of Gilgit-Baltistan Order 2018 (GoGBO), and ordered complete restoration of the PPP era Empowerment and Self Governance Order 2009.

It is pertinent to note that the Gilgit-Baltistan Supreme Appellate Court had suspended the GoGBO last month and had served show-cause notices on key federal officials.

By dismissing the GoGB Order 2018, the Supreme Appellate Court has effectively rolled back a much-hyped, but highly controversial, reforms order which claimed to empower the GB Legislative Assembly, but instead gave most of the powers to the Prime Minister of Pakistan, who is not elected by the people of GB.

Huge protest demonstrations were held across Gilgit-Baltistan, by opposition parties, pressure groups, lawyers and people from different walks of life, saying the proposed Ordered would change the demography of GB by allowing citizens of Pakistan to settle in the region.

The federal government plans to challenge the verdict in the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
