Protesters across Gilgit-Baltistan demand restoration of wheat price

Gilgit, February 21: A very large number of people came out on the streets today in different parts of the Gilgit-Baltistan region to express anger and register protest over the hike in price of wheat. People from all sects and different political background held rallies and processions to condemn the decision and demand its complete reversal.
They rejected the decision of the government to cease the price, asking for annulment of the earlier notification. Speakers said that the government in Gilgit and Islamabad are using tricks and stunts to quell the protests in the region by adopting cosmetic measures.
Thousands of people came out in Skardu, Shigar, Kharmang, Rondu and Khaplu on the call of MWM Baltistan to demand reversal of the hike in price of wheat.
In Gahkuch, the headquarters of Ghizer district, a large number of people carrying placards and banners came out on the roads after the Friday prayers. The protesters were addressed by Bazar Committee representatives Ayub, Tahir Ali Tahir and Hafiz Abdul Rahim, among others.
In Gilgit, Majlis Wehdatul Muslimeen (MWM) and Ahl-e-Sunnat wal Jamat (ASWJ) held separate rallies in different parts of the region’s capital.
Rallies were taken out from Jama Moti Masjid and Jama Imamia Masjid after Friday prayers.
Rallies were also held in the surrounding areas Gilgit city, including Bargo, Oshikandas, Jalaabad and Danoyre.
