Husband in Gilgit city arrested for burning wife to death

Gilgit: In a highly shocking and tragic incident, the Police in Gilgit has arrested a man on charges of burning his wife to death.

According to details shared by Station House Office Zahoor Ahmad, a man named Aqib allegedly put his wife alight today in the Muslim Colony area of Gilgit city. The woman, name withheld to maintain privacy, died on the spot, said Zahoor.

The horrific crime took place at around 8:15pm on Thursday night.

The charred dead body of the woman was shifted to DHQ Hospital Gilgit for autopsy.

The husband, Aqib, has been arrested under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code, on charges of murder. FIR No.90/17 has been registered against him, said Zahoor Ahmad.

Police has started investigations to ascertain whether the woman was killed before burning, or she died after being set alight. The gruesome incident has shocked the entire city, and people across the region, who have expressed their anger and disgust over the incident, calling for justice.

The accused was arrested soon after the incident by a group of police officials including Shamur Rehman, Ulfat, Arif Basha and Head Constable Tanzim ur Rehman, Zahoor told the media.
