By Asghar Khan

Gilgit, 20 April : A group of Wakhi speaking students of Karakuram International University organized an impressive meeting with senior professionals, here, at a local Hotel. A number of speakers had been invited to share their experiences and insights with the young students.

The speakers included Mr Muzaffar Udin, regional program manager of AKRSP, Mr Rehmat Ullah Baig, Chairman of Gulmit Educational and Social Welfare Society, Mr Ahmad Jami Sakhi, academic administrative officer of PDCN, Mr Sultan Ahmad, communication officer of FOCUS Humanitarian Assistance and Mrs Fozia Zahid of the Directorate of Women Development, Gilgit. Senior poet, cultural activist and teacher Mr Ali Qurban recited verses of his poetry related to theme of the day. The speakers emphasized on constant self improvement, hard work, cooperation, objectivitiy, pragmatism, systemtic progress and retrospective reflections on self and the society.

Growing numbers of Wakhi speaking students are studying at the region’s only university. They face a number of challenges, including accomodation and safety, among others. The objective of this get together, according to Ala Udin, a senior student at the university, was to create a nexus between the students and professionals and to capitalize on the insights and experiences of the later to solve issues faced by the former. Deliberations were also made on the possibility of instituting an organization that works for protection of rights of the students, fostering the notions of pluralism and establishing links with Wakhi/Pamiri students, coming from various parts of Gilgit-Baltistan and Central Asian Republics, in the future.

The program was a major success according the feedbacks received by this reporter. It was the first of its kind meeting of Wakhi professionals and students in Gilgit.

  1. I would like to congratulate the wakhi teaching staff at KIU, as they felt the need of such a forum where our students can interact with Wakhi professionals in the area. Ejaz Sakhi (a lecturer at KIU) was planning to hold such a forum for our studentrs last year, but due to many unavoidable reasons he could not, however he kept motivating students to arrange it themsilves. congrats to all students as well

  4. I would like to congratulate all the Gojali students of KIU for such a nice job. It must keep on and on…
Getting things done is not always what is most important. There is value in allowing others to learn, even if the task is not accomplished as quickly, efficiently or effectively.
