PT Report

Gilgit, November 8: According to information shared during a press conference here in Gilgit by Chaudhary Manzoor, PPP’s election manager, prime minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani is expected to reach Gilgit – Baltistan on November 10. He is expected to wrap up the election campaign activities of Pakistan People Party in the region by addressing a public rally in Gilgit city. It is also being expected that new development initiatives would be announced, including employment opportunities, for the region. Final schedule of the visit is being announced today. PPP workers have started preparations for welcoming the prime minister in the region.

Top leaders of PML – N finished their election tour of the region recently while Chaudhary Shujaat Hussain and Syed Mushahid Hussain are expected to reach Gilgit – Baltistan today to generate support for their party ticket holders. The self exiled leader of MQM, Altaf Hussain, has also been ‘meeting’ the voters through telephonic speeches, supporting members of the Rabta Committee who are in the region for the past two weeks. Similarly, Marvi Memon and Sher Afgan Niazi have also been addressing public rallies across the region to gather support for their party ticket holders. Liaqat Baloch of the Jamat – e – Islami also visited different places in the region.

It was expected in this scenario that some senior official of PPP would also visit the region. Earlier President Zardari’s name was also being taken in this regard but it seems that Gilani will be making his second trip of the region, within a couple of months.

Voters will go to polls on 12th November to elect their leaders. An alliance of regional nationalist parties, the Gilgit – Baltistan Democratic Alliance (GBDA) has announced boycott of the elections in four constituencies, after an alleged crackdown was carried out against their party workers in and around Gilgit city.
