[HUNZA Elects] Wazir Baig’s resounding victory in Hunza valley

by Zulfiqar Ali Khan

Hunza, November 12: The candidate of ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Wazir Baig scored a resounding victory in Hunza polls for the Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly.  According to unofficial results Waizr Baig of PPP has a lead of about 1,237 votes over MQM’s Kamil Jan. Wazir Baig secured 5,351 votes, Kamil Jan 4,114 and Noor Muhammad of Hunza Action Committee 3637 votes.

Wazir Baig has a clean sweep from all villages of Gojal except Shishkat, the village of Kamil Jan. For the first time in history of elections, PPP got highest in Ghulkin village, despite of Abbas Khan’s withdrawal from election in favor of MQM.

In Central Hunza, PPP won from Aliabad, Murtazabad, Doorkhun, Garelth, whereas Hunza Action Committee had high scores in Altit, Ahmedabad and Sarat.

MQM has majority votes in Haiderabad and Hassabad whereas Arif Hussain in Ganish and Mominabad. Sher Yar Khan succeeded to get the highest number of votes from Karimabad.

MQM has a clean sweep from all villages in Shinaki.

The people of Attabad boycotted the poll as a protest against lack of interest from government for the rehabilitation of the families affected from land movement .

Meanwhile, the polling process remained very peaceful with a turnout of about 44%. The highest turnout of 68% was observed in Shishkat.

  1. Congratulations to Mr. Wazir Baig for the victory, People of Hunza trusted on you and hope you will work to solve the main issues of Hunza like. 1) Additional seat for Hunza.
    2) Functional of Hunza as District and ensure equal rights of People of Hunza in deployment in those institutions.
    2) Compensation of and on time completion of KKH.
    We expect that your presence will benefit Hunza and remember that non productive leaders (Mir) were totally rejected by Hunza.

    I also congratulate to Mr. Kamil Jan and Noor Muhammad for their efforts, they played their game well, best of luck for next time.

  2. Well done PPP its because of Nazir sabir’s help and all local party leaders… but now we want fulfill all ur promises otherwise people of LA 6 are having more awareness will not give you room in future since you are going to have any key post in BG.

  3. the only reasonfor vectory for ppp is ragging in electon and distribution of Benazir income support program cards in gojal valley….it is shame full that they have sold their vote for few ruppees

  4. Clean sweep of MQM in all villages in Shinaki shows shallowness of shinaki people. I wonder what made them favour a fascist party. There decision is typical of streotype that shinakies are bereft of thinking and always reactionary. Can anybody tell me in details about what are the factors that made them so.

    1. Hi Khameto,

      Before I begin with what happened in Shinaki, bro, one must use a descent languge about talking about region and its people.

      Talking about what the Shinaki people did, I salute them for their contribution of change, a change towards a progressive Hunza. Yesterday’s fascists party is today’s most liberal, progressive and straight forward party, they do in what they firmly believe. At least, that fascist party is not headed by land lords, Mr. 50%s, or Mr. Rehman Malik alike people.

      Besides, they didn’t vote for MQM, they voted for the change, for party which fights for the self determination of people of Gilgit-Baltistan. They voted for a party which didn’t distribute Benazir bhutto Income Support Program, which didn’t pay cash and bought poor people’s conscience. By doing this, PPP’s leadership has made fun of people of Gilgit-Baltistan. Our well educated, well aware and professional people of upper Hunza, they showed that they don’t care about the development or the rights of people of Gilgit-Balistan but they believe partisanship. They promised something and betrayed the other because they got BIS Program’s forms and cash. I’m sorry but can you tell me why it happened?

      Talking about MQM being a fascists party, can you tell me PPP’s Al-Murtaza, Al-Zulfiqar, what about Mr. Zaradar and his aids? I wonder, if you can proof a single allegation of any of MQM’s ministers?

      You must be aware of Mr. Zaradar’s sub-marines scandal, that, the French news paper has published, they’re even ready to proof this in any of courts if taken.

      SO MY DEAR BROTHER, WHAT DO YOU SAY NOW?

      @ DIDAR, THERE WAS NO NAZIR SABIR MAGIC MY DEAR, IT WAS ALL MONEY AND BIS PROGRAM’S FORMS WHICH WORKED. IF IT WAS NAZIR SABIR, IT’D HAVE WORKED IN PREVIOUS ELECTIONS WHEN WAZIR BAIG LOST TO MIR SAHIB WITH SUCH A HUGE DIFFERENCE.

      HAPPY WINNING

      1. I posted this on another discussion but it stills true for this one.

        I congratulate the people of Hunza for electing Mr. Wazir Baig, an honest, educated and upright person. Mr. Wazir Baig typifies the people of hunza and is a true reflection of the society. Isn’t Hunza all about honesty, integrity, hard work and uncorruptibility, and that is why they should and have elected a person with these qualities.
        Hunza elected Ghazanfar Khan last time on the notion that he has great influence and would do well for the development but alas it was a false hope. Instead he and his cronies went on rampant corruption both moral and financial with the result that he was not even allowed to contest this election.

        People often say Wazir Baig when last elected did very little vis-à-vis development of the area but no one bothers to state which work he was not able to do. Anyway development funds should be spend on the basis of long term plan put forward by professionals and not on the whims of politician. Just because a number of new and young people entered the election fray does not mean the seasoned ones have to be rejected just for electing the new entrants. I am not sure if MQM is in the area for the long haul, it used money and people with money to make a foothold in the area, not for the people of the area but to shore up its bargaining a.k.a blackmail position in the federal and provincial government.

        Instead of taking delight in the entry of MQM in the political landscape the people of Gilgit-Baltistan and hunza in particular should ponder on why they haven’t got a regional/nationalist party of their own that is rooted in them and vouches for them rather than embracing a political party that at best is regional and represent a particular ethnic group.

      2. Mr. EK

        your seems to be very revotionary and want change over night… and that is what you mean it too,,,,, i still remember once in response of my comments you should yourself a loyal to PPP and now you show you belongingness to Central part of Hunza… Good brother keep on this……….

        You have putted a serios allegation on the entire soil of Gojal for taking money and bribes and BIS forms from Wazir Baig… for your clarity every bodies know how much money is disributed by the candidate of MQM and PPP….. Secendly do you think we should we stop the BISP on your recommendation… Dear it is a national programme and will keep on in four seasons ….

        For your information the people of Gojal have always showed great political muturity and will continue it,,, they have supported a candidate from Central part on political basis and we all appreciate this…. If they were after money or others they would have supported Kamil Jan, Shabaz or Aziz Ahmed. Gojal have casted their vote purely on merit and to a candidate who is on merit. Wazir is educated, seasoned politician, experience of community work, clean and neat past and deserve the position

        Dear who ever you are be careful in your comments and all

  5. Congratulations to Mr. Wazir Baig for the historical victory. The majority voters of the valley again trusted in your capacity and leadership. I hope you will strategise the initial set up and other pertinent issues of the newly notified district of Hunza-Nagar. 1) Additional seats(+2) for Hunza–Lower, central and Upper.
    2) Additional Tehsils (+2) in the light of area/gegraphy and population proportionately to other districts in the Regionof G&B .3) A KIU campus in Hunza and other valleys of G&B. 4) Madical and Engg colleges each for the regions of Gilgit and Baltistan each. 4) Struggle for the constitutional rights of the people of G&B. 5) Link–digital and road– the far-flunged valleys with the national highways.
    6) Compensation of lands to the individual/collective owners; and re-look the leftover compensations of even for the initial phase in the 70s.
    7) It is hoped that your struggles will benefit Hunza in the shape of more developmental projects throughout.

    1. I wish if Mr. Wazir could do these things. We have learnt alot from his previous tenure. I can say that “Sukhi par sy saye ki umeed nahe ki jati”
      and Mr. Wazir is a sukhe par

  6. yes indeed the MQM has clean sweeped all villages in hunza shinaki as they have experienced number of times the selfish and opportunist burushaski people of centeral hunza like so called MIR and wazir baig.but they focused all their attention on the accumualtion of wealth even for their comming generations on the cost of the people of hunza shinaki.some 15 years ago the the project of the construction of bridge was approved for hunza shinaki but so called leaders of hunza devour all the fund.this is the reason that we wanted to give new face opportunity whether he belongs to MQMor KNM.

  7. Congratulation for PPP and Wazir Baig for his great victory and we all hope you will straggle for the constitutional rights of GB and a additional seat for upper Hunza Gojal.

    Ali Aman Gojali
    Badakhshan

  8. congratulation to wazir baig for the victory.hope that he will work for the people of hunza and gojal to solve the problem of the aera.

  9. @ Sherbaz Khan, very well said. These people can’t tolerate to have the powers gone to either gojal or shinaki. I’m from central hunza myself and if talk to give the seat to gojal or shinaki, they won’t like this. Very much like in Pakistan, where Baltistan and NWFP are ignored. This atitude is bad.

  10. mr wazir baig is not suitable for this post …………..he should better stay at home coz this is the age when a person needs respect with a grand cup of tea ………..

    1. Dear Saliha

      You seem to be very young and do not know about Democracy…. Wazir is not supposed to stay at home rather people of Hunza have asked them to come out and work for the walfare of the people ,,,,, lets hope he gets an important slot in the first provincial government

      1. DEAR KARIM,

      1. Dear Tausif

  11. Congratulation to Mr.Wazir Baig who has served the region in a social and religious context in the past and as member legislative assembly.
    In spite of all odds in the polling like BISP and using govt machinery we have to accept the success of Mr.Baig and let him work with his full potential. He has to address great challenges ahead like,
    1.Fight for additional seat
    2.Fight against corruption in development projects
    3.Establishment of new educational institutes in lower and upper hunza, Colleges and HSS.
    4.Completion of the previous left projects.
    5.Extenstion and metaling of Chipurson road.
    6.Electrification of Hunza by hydroelectric power
    7.Resolving the issue of Sost Dry Port by meeting the shareholders and other stakeholders.
    8.Clean and safe drinking water projects with the help of NGOs and INGOs
    9.Establishment Hunza Nagar district by making Aliabad the main hub of the said district.
    10.Employment facilitation to the skilled and qualified youth.

    Let see and help to make Hunza a model society.

  12. Speaking on objective truths and not on emotional rants, let me congratulate Wazir Baig for being a true leader of Hunza. Remember this is not the first victor for PPP in parts of central Hunza or Gojal.

    Gojal has been the winning place for PPP, not because of the stupid allegations leveled by some reactionary zealots above, but because people in this region were the most oppressed in the state of Hunza. They voted for party and ideology, not for personality or race!!

    Noor Muhammad should learn from the disaster that he has faced in all parts of Hunza, except for his hometown, Altit!! Where else was he able to win? He doesn’t have even up to hundred votes in Gojal valley.

    Kamil Jan is a nice man, but his party choice failed him in Gojal. Had he not been in MQM, people of Gojal would have voted for him. Bad choice.

    Wise politics people of Gojal. Now you should press Wazir Baig for the additional Tehsil and sub-division status for the region. The district council elections are coming up. You need to demand at least two more district council seats to be relevant in Hunza – Nagar district.

    It’s a harsh reality that majority of the people of central Hunza don’t see the stains on their cloths (including the millions of rupees obtained from BISP in Altit and other parts of the central valley).

    Those who are accusing PPP of using BISP forms shall also know that Ghazanfar Ali Khan, Attiqa and Shehbaz Khan, Alam Jan and other members of the past government have also distributed thousands of BISP forms among their supporters. I know for sure that Ghazanfar got around two thousand forms for himself and Attiqa!!

    If BISP could win votes, why was Shehbaz able to get only 500 votes from all parts of Hunza? He distributed hundreds of forms in Gojal, among his supporters?

    Accept the reality that voters from Gojal valley made a very wise decision. I also salute the 25 votes PPP got from Shishkat and the 147 votes that Kamil Jan got from Gulmit 🙂

    that’s the beauty of democracy

    1. Dear Haq Parast
      Mr. Do u know y the so called governor of GB visted Hunza at the eleventh hour n not before that?
      The notables from all over Hunza requested Noor Muhd to contest the election and he did so.
      Noor Muhd not only win from his home town. You must check his votes from Karimabad and Aliabad.
      Before blaming on us for BISP forms just check ur own status that how much u get benefit from BISP.
      Compare all the candidates from Hunza n u will come to know that who deserves to lead Hunza.
      One more thing I want to say u Mr. Haq Parast just wait n see the performance of winning condidate in the months ahead

      1. dear meena
        har aik kam ka koi time hota hai or bisp distrubution ka bi time hai. or haan bisp form sirf official time me distribute hota tha. pher woh 11th ki raat 1 baje ke baad ppp ke karkonon ni q distribute ki? is it not ill legal? kiya hamara govt frod nahi? jo BISP forms gariboon ko dena tha woh saare awam me kiyun distribute kiya? or haan shishket me q BISP forms distribute nahi hwe? kiya is liye ki shishket ke maximum votes MQM ko jaarahi thi?

  13. guys guys guys election khatam ho chuke hain ab kya sooch ab ap apne leader ko time do ke wo ap ke liye kuch seat aye nae ke ap loog piche par gaye try to respect ur leader beacuse you have elect them for a given mendate..!! agr vote nae diya tu ap ko haq bi na kuch kehne ko..!! see wetern country ppl they respect their leader even thoguh if they are known bad in islamic world and they dont come out side and have their protest but wo loag help karte hain k hamare leader kuch kare ehamare liye aur use thora time bi dete hain..!!

  14. Dear Sherbaz,
    The very Iman Shah was part and parcel of government during Musharaf rule. Shinakies did not give vote for change,. there must be something within society that made them so. i want answer from that angle not emotional outpouring of EK who paints MQM in the colours of saint. I lived in Karachi for a long time and i know very well their tactics which is similar to gangster and mafia. we are already suffering from sectarian hatred. now people like you and EK are invitation another plague in the shape of MQM. there is saying in shina ‘gottaye shu bi garat nay bu to loye aroot nay wain.’ ‘if your dog is not coward then no fox dares to enter into premises of your home.’ it is we who are inviting these evils. MQM was part of musharaf government, she is with ppp now. and it can be with anybody. this party, like other parties, is not in favour of change. Indeed, it has covert support of establishment. My basic criteria is tolerance of dissent and respect of diversity. Altaf Hussain never tolerates dissent. if anybody goes against his will he meets the fate of Rais Amrohi and Azim Tariq. Sherry Rehman and Raza Rabani opposed Zardari but they are still alive. but it is not possible with the case of MQM. i can criticise any party in a hotel in lahore but if i speak against mqm in a restaruant i won’t be alive. so brother do not become devils advocate. have a criteria for every party and judge according to it not because of fanfare and mad rhetoric of altaf a la Masoluni.

  15. congratulation to wazir baig for the victory.hope that he will work for the people of hunza and gojal to solve the problem of the aera.

    Abid jaan hunzai

    Winners vs. Losers

    The Winner is part of the answer;
    The Loser always a part of the problem.

    The Winner has a plan;
    The Loser always has an excuse.

    The Winner says “Let me do it for you”;
    The Loser says “that’s not my job”.

    The Winner sees an answer in every problem;
    The Loser sees a problem in every answer.

    The Winner sees a green near every sand trap;
    The Loser sees a sand trap near every green.

    The Winner says “It may be difficult but it’s possible”;
    The Loser says “It may be possible but it’s difficult”.
