  5. Hero of His Time.

Uncle Ali Gohar left us after 85 years May God Bless his soul in eternal peace. Ameen. Being a social worker, freedom fighter and a climber he lived a successful and inspiring life. He had the honor of guiding Ex President Field Marshal Mohd Ayub Khan to Zarabad Hussaini for hunting due to his strong physic and mental toughness. He came to Gilgit for surgery but got hospital acquired infection that proved to be fatal. He reached to Hussaini with grace and took the last breath of life there which was the last wish of his life.
At this sad time my humble sympathy are with my brothers and sisters and rest of the family members.

We the people of Husayni have lost a son and elder whom served his home-town in a very visionary way , his leadership role was very visible as a community leader for the region of Gojal, Hunza and the whole region of Gilgit &Baltistan. Leading from the front, as volunteer in the Community Institutions, at social forums and as an outstanding soldier of the freedom-war, in 1948, that gave us the region of Gilgit-Baltistan is historical. 41. Indeed great shock. The latest I had met him was in summer 2007. Spent few hoursat my home in the village- did share with us about his life, changes over the past decades and mostly about Kargil war and toursim adventures. My son Basharat had taken notes of what he said. He may share it was us some times later. However, he had an exceptional sense of humor, leadrship qualities and knowledge of war and high altitude challenges.

Condolences to the family members and paryers for his soul to rest in eternal peace.

  42. Profile of Ali Gohar
Ali Gohar was born in 1926, in the remote and harsh terrain of the Hussiani village up in the Karakorum Mountains- 150 km from Gilgit town. He joined the NA Scouts on first, January 1948. Being one of the few distinguished individuals in his area, he had joined the N-Scouts and also completed his studies still grade 3.He had fought the war of 1948 at Kargil against the forces of Dogra and was in the Rustum platuun in those crucial days.

Soldiers during those days lacked machinery and automated guns and other artillery equipment. The NA scouts showed up a tough resistance during the wars and made their enemies accept the defeat. He achieved this triumph along with many of his other fellow soldiers in the independence of Gilgit from the invading Dogra forces. The war ended in 7 months on 7th of November, 1948.At one instance according to Mr.Ali Gohar: “I did eat 2 chapattis(bread) in 4 days”. This makes one imagine and realize the hardships which our elders have faced during those difficult days when food was scarce and the land routes made it even worse. He did mention names of the following people his colleagues at the war front: Sana Khan, Mohammad Abass and Aziz Muhammad from Passu. Others from Gojal were Bobosh, Ghoyib Shoh, Yor Ali, Tayghun Shah and Rizwon .

Serving under the command of Shah Khan he along with his group of soldiers had destroyed a Polo ground by a mortar attack, where people had gathered for a match. This move proved to be decisive one and resulted in heavy death casualty for the enemy. Before this offensive strike Ghulam Murtaza’s platuun was already sent to invade the area. Later during the war they had captured an army Chawni (cantonment) by infiltrating through the walls of the enemies garrison. One could not imagine the emotions and feeling of the family members of Mr.Ali Gohar because he was the only son of his father and the only heir to his father. His father’s death became the cause of his resignation at a age of 27 from the N-Scouts in 1953, and returned to support his family.

Now being the only senior adult male in his family he took the responsibility of practicing mountain farming for his family. Ali Gohar was young, enthusiast and was exposed beyond his village and had basic training in N-Scouts. Besides farming he wanted to earn additional off-farm income to have improved living. He did go with western tourists climbing mountains. He started his career as one of the first mountain guides of northern areas.

In 1955 Ali Gohar took part in a German expedition to Nanga Parbat as a guide. Ayub from Gulmit also participated in that expedition. Ali Gohar climbed up to the 4th camp of Nanga Parbat without any past experiences of climbing dangerous and snow capped peaks like the Nanga Parbat which is notorious for its death tolls up to date.

He went as a guide with the Italian team in 1956, to K-2 which resulted in a summit. He gave his time in 1958 to his joint expedition of the Pakistan and the British army to Rakaposhi peak in central Hunza. Shah Khan and Aslam also participated in this expedition, which was a complete success. In 1959 a joint German-British expedition went to Batura to climb a difficult and snow capped peak. Some members of the team died and the peak was not scaled. In 1960 Ali Gohar went along with the British-American team to Talawa Nagar to capture Tolo peak. In this expedition Ali Gohar went till the 4th camp and the expedition of the team turned out to be a summit. I973 was the year when he went to Patundas (pasture of the village Ghulkin), his team could not summit Mumhael peak and turned out to be a sad return.

With a Japanese expedition in 1974 he went to an unnamed peak which was not a summit. The year of 1978 marked the summit of Tirich Mir which is the highest peak in the Hindukush Mountain Range in Chitral. This time it was a Japanese expedition and was a successful ascent to the top of the peak .Ali Gohar went till the 4th camp of this peak. In 1978 he left serving as a mountain guide from the tourism industry. He was also a hunter, his hunt included duck, patrages and snow cock pheasants. He had joined the border security force Levee in 1959 and retired after serving for 30 years. His duty stations included Cilick, Khunjerab and Shimshal living in one of the most physically challenged terrains in the world.

He was a volunteer/ social worker and a village leader. He led his village in two key court cases: 1) cattle grazing rights of Hussani village in Batura and 2) land dispute with Gulkin. He used to be at the forefront in resolving disputes in and around the village.

He died at the age of 85 at his village.

I feel grieved over his death.

Note: this profile is an outcome of an interview of Mr. Ali Gohar in July 2007.
