Lake water keeps Gojal hostage

PT Report

Islamabad, July 03: The Attabad Landslide disaster and subsequent damming of Hunza River has disrupted road connections between Gojal and rest of Pakistan. A population of over 25000 people have been put at the mercy of weather boat operators.

Drainage of the lake had started on May 29 but due to narrowness of the spillway and rocky composition of the lake barrier the water discharge has not increased significantly.

Water level in the lake has reportedly decreased by around 25 inches during the past week due to relatively high outflow through a spillway built by the Frontier Works Organization. Around 16,000 Cusecs of water flow through the spillway has been reported by various organizations monitoring the lake.

No house has been dismantled in the valley during the last week due to ceasing of water rise.

In the meanwhile a delegation of GB traders and cabinet members visited Kashghar city of China’s Xinjiang province to participate in the Kashghar Trade Fair. According to reports the delegation, led by CM Mehdi Shah, had gone without following the official procedures so they were unable to meet any high official.

It is pertinent to note that the delegation had vowed to ensure opening of the Khujrav portion of KKH throughout the year.

  1. I am a bit depressed to see this in ur report:

” delegation, led by CM Mehdi Shah, had gone without following the official procedures so they were unable to meet any high official”.

check for the authenticity of the report. Explore how the CM and his delegation were unable to follow the ‘official procedures’?
Before the tour, the rumours were the CM took a high level delegation to discuss with the Xinjiang government under the protocal between GB government and Xinjiang government to promote trade, cultural, scientific and research ties?

And there were also rumours that special topic to be discussed by the CM was how to increase cooperation in the face of the Attabad disaster and what incentives the chinese may give in this regard?
If the CM was touring they may have informed the Foriegn Office, Chinese embassy and the Xinjiang Government protocal office in Kashgar and Urumqi?
