“Mother and Child Health Care” training held in Ishkoman Valley, Ghizer

Gilgit, September 14: Pakistan Wetlands Programme – Northern Alpine Wetlands Complex, Gilgit-Baltistan joined hands with Qurumbar Social Welfare Conservation and Development Organization to organize a two-day training on  “Mother Child Health Care” for a selected group of women from Qurumbar Valley, Ghizer.

Held from September 12-13,2011 at Imit Village, the training was attended by more than 30 women trainees. Health issues of the valley are high despite the presence of an AKHSP unit.

Discussing the health issues being faced by people in Qurumbar Valley, a participant said that the doctor-less ten bed hospital is unable to provide services to the patients. Even the health unit of AKHSP, she said, was not enough for the population.

Patients in need of immediate medical attention are generally referred to hospitals in Gahkuch and Gilgit, she further said.

Many women and children are also vulnerable due to nutritional deficiencies. Women are especially in danger during child birth. The new born children who survive birth are exposed to considerable risk and the infant mortality rate are even higher in remote rural areas like Qurumbar as compared to town areas like Gahkuch district head quarter Ghizer.

The two day training focused on important topics related to mother and infant health care, including care during pregnancy and its importance, antenatal care schedules and standards ,balance diet during pregnancy, preparation for safe deliver, danger signs of pregnancy, care during and after deliver, Tetanus toxoid injection (TT) vaccination and its schedule, postpartum complication and care, reproductive health problems, family planning, care of infant and newborn, immunization, importance of breast feeding and right techniques of feeding.

During two days training session participants took keen interest, they prepared group presentation and presented them in group which reflected their level of knowledge before & after training. The participants were also given time to clear their quarries through question and answers sessions.

The trainees also showed their high willingness in such type of productive training and demanded for more training in mother child health care in future. The training successfully ended with thanks and enthusiastic encouragement from the participants.
