NHA plans to complete KKH expansion by 2013, land owners await compensation

Gilgit, September 17: The National Highways Authority (NHA) plans to complete expansion and realignment of the Karakoram Highway by November 2013.
A source in National Highway Authority has said that the up-gradation of KKH‚ will usher and era of progress and growth for the entire region. While the government officials are making tall claims of post-construction prosperity and economic growth, land owners across in Diamer, Gilgit, and Hunza – Nagar are still waiting for payment of compensation money for the loss of significant chunk of valuable cultivable and non-cultivable land.
Groups of people have been holding protest demonstrations and meeting with government officials to settle the compensation issue but the bureaucratic red-tapism and lack of political will have failed all their efforts, so far.
