LHVs and nurses block roads in parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, demand regularization of jobs

Gilgit/Aliabad/Gahkuch: Protest demonstrations and rallies were held by Lady Health Visitors, Nurses and other health workers in different parts of Hunza-Nagar, Ghizer and Gilgit, as the anti-polio vaccination drive kicked off today in Gilgit-Baltistan. Large number of women staged sit-ins and blocked major roads to demand the authorities to regularize their services. They also protested against non-payment of salaries for seven months.
The protesters were holding placards and banners and chanting slogans in favor of their demands.
They were addressed by notables, political leaders and civil society representatives, who pledged their support for the women’s cause and urged the government to resolve the issue.
Gilgit
Protesters staged a massive protest demonstration in front of the Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister’s office. They threatened to continue the protest till their demands were met and their issues were resolves.
Gahkuch
Protesters blocked the road connecting Gilgit with Chitral for several hours and chanted slogans against the government officials for neither paying them salaries, nor making their jobs permanent.
Hunza
Protesters blocked the Karakoram Highway in Aliabad town of Hunza. They were holding placards and banners inscribed with demands and slogans in favor of their demands. They were addressed among others by MLA Mirza Hussain, Progressive Youth Front’s Baba Jan and several other political and social figures.
The protest demonstrations in all areas concluded peacefully after assurances from political and administration officials about resolution of the issues.
The protesters have threatened that they will resume the rallies and demonstrations if their demands were not fulfilled.
The blockade of roads created for travelers and patients as the protesters refused to allow vehicles to pass through. Citizens complained against the road blockades and urged the protesters to allow vehicles to travel.
