Gilgit council member sworn in

by: Zulfiqar Ali Khan

Hunza, Dec 25: Progressive Youth Front chief organizer Baba Jan on Thursday took oath as member of Gilgit District Council after an election tribunal accepting his petition declared him winner from Shinaki, lower Hunza, in October 2004 election.

Mohammad Hussain, Chairman District Council administered the oath of office to Baba Jan at District Council hall in the presence of the district council members and notables.

Iman Shah was declared successful in the 2004 elections as member of the district council. However, Baba Jan challenged the result in the election tribunal alleging that bogus votes of those who have either died or were not present in the city were polled in favour of his opponent.

He also accused Iman Shah of distributing money among the voters.

Hundreds of supporters of Baba Jan took him in a big rally from Gilgit to his native village Nasirabad, Hunza.

When the rally reached Juglot, Guroo, a person opened fire on the rally. The culprit was caught immediately and identified as Liaqat, a resident of Juglot. The rally received warm receptions at Hussainabad, Mayun, Khanabad and Nasirabad.

Political and public circles have greeted Baba Jan for his victory. They condemned the firing on a peaceful rally and demanded probe to reach the actual culprit.

Talking to this correspondent, Baba Jan reaffirmed his commitment to organise the youth of Hunza and Gilgit-Baltistan to lead a peaceful movement for the constitutional and political rights of the deprived communities of the Gilgit-Baltistan. Also at Dawn

  1. Yet another slap across the face of Gazhani!!!!!!!!

Iman Shah was one of his loyal subjects and his partner in all the deeds he has been engaged since the last elections.

Perhaps their practices matched so closely.
