Harsh weather hampers rescue of stranded nomads
GILGIT, Jan 30: Avalanches on Friday prevented a 150-member rescue team from advancing towards a remote village in the Ghizer district where heavy snowfall had left around 35 nomads stranded, the local police chief said.
The team, which attempted to reach the Darkosh village in the Yasin valley, was comprised of volunteers, levies force and police personnel.”They (the rescuers) have returned unsuccessful after hectic efforts, as avalanches continued to hit the route and it was impossible to reach the area where the nomads are settled,” Inspector General of Police (Northern Areas) Farman Ali told Dawn.
Mr Ali said the police had gathered information about the stranded people from the locals. He said the law enforcers had come to know that the nomads had bought food supplies just before the recent snowfall, adding that those were enough for several days.
The police chief said the chieftain of the village, Yousuf Numberdar, had confirmed it, “so there is no matter to worry about.” IGP Ali said due to bad weather conditions an air link could not be established. Dawn
