Gilgit: Hostel of Government Education College converted into Police Station, students protest
PT Report
Gilgit, February 18: Students of the Government Education College have entered the second day of their protest against the administration’s decision to convert their hostels into a police station. The decision has been termed as part of an anti-education policy which is ruining the image and objective of educational institutions.
According to details, the hostel of Government Education College Jutial has been converted into a police station and police officials have started working in the premises.
Government officials say that due to lack of sufficient prison facilities in the city it is imperative to use government properties to house prisoners.
It is pertinent to note that in the past also some schools in Gilgit, including F.G High School Jutial, were converted into “sub-jail” and prisoners were housed there for several months.
Educationists believe that environment and image of a place of learning has profound impact on psychology of the students.
The decision has been condemned the GB Teachers Association, who have announced to hold a strike to demand vacation of the college hostel building.
