Swelling of lake formed due to glacier surge worries residents of Shismhal valley, Hunza
Hunza: The Khurdopin glacier in the Shismhal valley of District Hunza has been advancing at a fast pace. The advancing glacier has blocked a glacial stream, forming a lake (Veerjerav Lake). This lake, on bursting, can cause devastation in the Shimshal Valley.
According to Rehmat Ullah Baig, a renowned community leader, has shared these photographs, saying the lake caused by the glacier surge is now “three times bigger than what it was during the summer”.
The locals have requested the government, NGOs and other research organizations to study the lake and inform them about any precautionary measures necessary.
