SUPARCO to start real-time satellite monitoring of Khurdopin Glacier and Lake
Islamabad: A meeting was held under the Chair of Chairman NDMA Gen Umar Hayat today in order to sensitise NDMA of the issue of surging khurdapin Glacier and resultant lake and future action plan.
It was decided during the meeting that SUPARCO will immediately start real-time monitoring of the surging glacier and the lake using satellite. A technical team will also be constituted to visit the site and prepare recommendations based on scientific analyses. NDMA will provide financial assistance to GB government for mitigation measures. The situation of the glacier and lake will be reviewed during a weekly meeting at the NDMA.
Dr.Ghulam Rasool DG PMD and Mr.Nawab Alam CEO Agha Khan Agency for Habitat also attended.
On behalf of GB Govt DG GBDMA Mr. Yahya Akhunzada and Mr.Usman Ahmad Commissioner Gilgit Div briefed and sensitized the forum on the issue.
Chairman NDMA has appreciated the efforts of GB Govt, AKAH and local community, and has assured all out support to GBDMA in handling this developing Glacial lake.
