Writing letter to Swiss authorities useless: Aitzaz
ISLAMABAD: Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan on Wednesday said that judiciary has always played an important role in promoting democracy in the country.
He said that Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had stated that there would be no more martial laws in the country. He said that President Asif Ali Zardari enjoys complete immunity in Pakistan as it was guaranteed by the Constitution.
Immunity to President is a worldwide tradition, he added.
Replying to a question about writing a letter to Swiss authorities, he said that it was an useless act, as the President enjoys immunity under the Vienna Convention.
Barrister Aitzaz said that there are two options to remove the prime minister, either he resigns or a no confidence motion is moved against him in the National Assembly.
He said Constitution gives immunity to five designations in the country, the President and the four provincial governors.
Replying to another question he said that former President Pervez Musharaf did not enjoy immunity because he faces civil proceedings.
He said that the final decision of the court in any case is the one which it gives after hearing the other party.
If the court announces a decision without hearing the other party, then the verdict has no importance, he said. The Supreme Court has not heard the Prime Minister yet, he added. [DAWN]
