Gilgit-Baltistan to get rid of loadshedding by 2011
GILGIT, Jan 1: The Northern Areas’ water and power department has claimed that it will overcome power shortage in the region within the next three years, and building on the success, it will be in a position to sell out electricity by 2015.
The department’s executive engineer, Naz Akbar, told Dawn that at present 93 power stations were functioning in the region.
Mr Akbar said the water and power department was currently incapable of generating electricity vis-à-vis demand, as the generation capacity was 77.7 megawatt against the local demand of 148 megawatt.
According to him, 14 power projects were completed last year, while 27 projects are under construction and would be commissioned within stipulated period.
“The department has focused all attention on completion of these projects,” Mr Akbar said.
He divulged that Rs3,429.442 million were being spent on these 27 ongoing projects, which would produce 66.2 megawatt electricity. Source Dawn
THANKX MR. NAZ AKBAR FOR THE INFORMATIONS AND UPDATE ON THE PRESENT SITUSTION OF ELECTRICTY IN GILGIT-BALTISTAN AREAS AND SPECIALLY HUNZA GOJAL.
DAER NAZ SHEEB, U MISSED HERE SOME VERY AND GOOD POINTS- THAT WAS, WITH IN THE AREA THERE ARE SOME VILLAGES, THEY HAVE INNITIATED JVs WITH THE AKRSP AND NAWP DIVISION TO MEET THE ELECTICITY REQUIREMENTS OF THEIR VILLAGES. THE ONE IS AT AHMAD ABAD ABOUT THREE OR FOUR KM FROM THE FAMOUS BALTIT FORT OF HUNZA AND THE THE SECOND AND BIGGEST IN ITS SHAPE AND DESIGN & NEW INCEPTION ARE AT MOORKHOUN HYDAL PROJECT NEAR SOOST. BOTH THE IDEA AND FEASIBILITY ARE PREPARED BY THE LOCAL VILLAGERS AND EXTENDED THEIR HAND FOR COOPERATION TO GILGIT-BALTISTAN POWER AUTHORITY AND AKRSP. THE ZELOUS AND MOTIVATED HONOURARY WORKERS ARE WORKING AND GIVING THEIR TIME AND KNOWLEDGE TO MAKE THE VILLAGERS AWARE OF THE ENERGY IMPORTANCE WHAT IS THE IMPORTANTANCE OF ENERGY IN TODAYS LIFE. THE VILLAGERS OF MOORKHOUN DESIGNED ON DINT OF THEIR OWN TE DESIGN OF WARE HOUSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS, WHICH HELPS IN TRANS BORDER TRADE BETWEEN CHINA AND PAKISTAN. FEW OF THE VERY RARE IDEAS ARE IN THE PIPE LINE AND THE PAPER WORKS ON THEM ARE IN SECONDARY STAGES–INSHALLAH WILL COME WITH IN A YEAR OR TWO
THE NORTHERN AREAS ELECTRICITY AUTHORITY AND MANAGEMENT OF AKRSP WITH THE TWO SMALL VILLAGES ARE AN EXAMPLE FOR REST OF THE COUNTRY AND CAN BE IMLEMENTED BASED ON FURTHER RESEARCH, EVALUTATIONS AS MILE STONE FOR THE MOUNTANIOUS AREAS AS WELL.
MR. NAZ, UR COOPERATION ARE AN EXAMPLE FOR THE REST OF THE OFFICIALS OF ANY DEPARTMENT WORKING WITH IN THE COUNTRY & SPECIALLY GILGIT-BALTISTAN THAT BY JOINT VENTURES WE TOGATHER CAN MAKE A DIFFEREBCE.
FEW OF THE PICX OF MOORKHOUN PRJECT ARE UP LOADED FOR UR UPDATE HAVE A GLANCE ON THE THREE Es ( ENERGY, ECONOMY & ENVIRONMENT) ON WEB PAGE OF DY. CHIEF ENGINEER BAIG ALI —-zee2525ali, have a glance and enjoy—-
AT THE END ” ENERGY IS LIFE AND ECONOMY IS BACKBONE, COMBINATION OF THE TWO IS ENVIRONMENT”
I don’t understand how the Gilgit-Baltistan water and power department calculate the local demand for electricity but it seems they are grossly underestimating the local demand. A total demand ofr 148MW would mean a percapita demand of 100watt (if the population of G-B is taken as 1.5million) or a per capita consumption of 148watt (if the population is taken as 1 million). At least 20-25% of the electricity produced would be lost during transmission. In UK an average of 1.1Kwatt (1100watt) electricity is estimated to be consumed by an household. I hope the G-B water and power dept. also estimates this much electricity use per household if not more considering the comparably very large hh size.
