20 brands of cooking oil and Ghee banned by Assistant Commissioner Punial

Gilgit: The Assistant Commissioner of Punial Tehsil in Ghizer District of Gilgit-Baltistan has instructed the public to avoid using 20 brands of cooking oil and Ghee.

This has been announced through an official circular, in which the Assistant Commissioner has referred to a similar instruction issued by the Punjab Food Authority, after reportedly testing various brands of cooking oil and Ghee. The 20 brands have been identified as hazardous, and the public have been asked to stop consuming them. Some of the brand names are: Shan Cooking Oil, Shan Banaspati Ghee, Smart Canula Cooking Oil, Ghani Cooking Oil, Tallo Banaspati, Malta Banaspati and Naz Banaspati, among others.

An updated list of the band brands has been shared by the Assistant Commissioner’s office today, in which a typing error has been rectified.

It is pertinent to note that there is no mechanism to control the quality of edible items being brought to the Gilgit-Baltistan region from other parts of the country, and from abroad.

Substandard food items have been identified by medical practitioners on several occasions as a major cause of deteriorating health situation in a region once known for good health.
