Gilgit airport strip under water, flights cancelled

PT Report

Gilgit, July 25: No flights could land at runway of the Gilgit airport during the past two days because water from a nearby channel has submerged parts of the strip.

According to details due to heavy rains in Gilgit a channel carrying water for the Sonikot locality flooded its banks and entered the airport strip. Hundreds of commuters had to suffer due to cancellation of flights for two days.

Public circles have termed the incident to reflect on non serious attitude of the Civil Aviation Authority, responsible for maintaining the airport and ensuring that the runway is available for flights. An inquiry into the incident has been demanded to learn lessons for the future to avoid such embarrassing situations.
