Why was KIU’s Hunza Campus inaugurated at the Governor’s residence?
Hunza: President Mamnoon Hussain yesterday inaugurated the Hunza Campus of the Karakoram International University. It was a happy occasion for residents of the valley, but they were also baffled.
What took the locals, including university students and their parents, by surprise was the fact that the inauguration ceremony was held off campus, at the residence of the current Governor, Mir Ghazanfar Ali Khan.
“Does Mir Ghazanfar intend to donate his land for the university’s campus”, people asked online. Venue of the inauguration was startling because the campus is located merely two kilometres away.
Locals in Hunza and Gilgit have also complained about the closure of roads, and keeping the public away from the President. “We wanted to see the President and welcome him our region, but the administration barred us from going anywhere near him”, complained locals on various social media pages.
The strict security arrangements have been widely criticized by the locals, as well as tourists, who had to wait for several hours as roads were closed for the President’s entourage.
“Unlike other parts of the country, the KKH is the only road in the region. Closing it for several hours causes immense troubles for the public”, complained others.
