PM Nawaz Sharif to inaugurate Lawari Tunnel tomorrow: MNA Iftikharuddin
CHITRAL: Member National Assembly (MNA) Shehzada Iftikharuddin has posted on Facebook that PM Nawaz Sharif will inaugurate the Lawari tunnel on 20th July, i.e. tomorrow.
The Lawari Tunnel, started by Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto in the late 1970s, is finally getting completed, after hitting many snags, during different regimes.
The Lawari Tunnel will connect Upper Dir with Chitral District, in the Malakand Agency, making commutation easier for the residents of Chitral, and other travelers.
In absence of the tunnel, the residents of Chitral had to travel via the Lawari Top, a 3,118 meters high dangerous and steep peak, which remains closed during most of the winters every year, because of heavy snowfall.
The tunnel is also important for the CPEC project, because it is projected to serve as an alternate route of the Karakoram Highway; several billion rupees have already been allocated for expansion and black-topping of the Ghizer-Chitral road.
