Efforts on to make Hunza – Nagar a model municipality: Zafar Waqar Taj

HUNZA, April 21: “Every effort would be made to develop a model municipality in the newly created Hunza-Nagar district through public private partnership”, said Deputy Commissioner Hunza-Nagar, Zafar Waqar Taj while addressing an event organized in connection with the 40th Earth Day, today in Ailabad Hunza. The event was organized by Karakoram Area Development Organization-KADO with collaboration of the Earth Day Network and local partners, including Hunza Public School and Boy Scouts Association.
The commissioner as head of district administration assured all support to the civil society organizations for combating environmental issues in Hunza. “Our focus remains on the emergency situation prevailing due to the Jan 4 Attabad landslide disaster and its aftermath”, he said.
He appreciated the role of KADO in running the Pakistan’s only community-based solid waste management mechanism in Hunza. Addressing the gathering KADO Chairman, Sher Alam, called for urgency in dealing the graving environmental issues in Hunza. He said KADO is utilizing its limited resources in order to arrest the solid waste issues in Central Hunza. He stressed the need to strengthen and replicate the present mechanisms to all parts of Hunza in order to save the beauty of the valley.
Ghulam Ali, CEO of KADO highlighted the need to develop synergies among public, private and civil society in order to develop a community-based replicable model in different environmental disciplines. Mr. Waris Karim, Principal Aliabad Public School stressed the need to make students conscious of protecting their environment.
Earlier the day, the district commissioner along with hundreds of students, special people, scouts, government officials and representatives of civil society organizations participated in a walk in Aliabad Bazar, the commercial hub of Hunza-Nagar district. The participants chanted slogans highlighting the need to protect the earth for the survival of humanity. The commissioner also initiated a plantation campaign in Hunza. Prizes were also distributed among winners of different competitions held in connection with the Earth Day event.
